Danny Pushing WTC Fantasies to the Max Monday, August 22, 2005
We'd file this one in the Blotter, but we don't have a Department of Prior Retroactive Precrime. Yet. Several loyal 'snipes have written in to point out the rank, rankling wrongness of the above image, which is being circulated in a press release to pimp an October show of Daniel Libeskind's work"including many original drawings done in [his] hand"at the infamous Max Protetch gallery in New York. Given the offhand nature of the thing, one might easily assume, as we did, that it was a thinking tool, a relic of the creative processthe mind at work, the intellect at play. In short, a sketch. But lo, Readers, and behold: our sources' sources point out that, while Danny's WTC master plan was cobbled together in the fall of 2002, such features as the sunken footprints of Michael Arad's memorial and (geek alert) the fifth phantom tower south of the site were not added until much laterin the case of the memorial not 'til January 2004. As for that particular Freedom Tower, we're not sure what the fuck it is. But to the point: In his zeal to project his relevance at Ground Zero, did Daniel Libeskind go so far as to reimagine the timeline of the development and attempt to freeze same in a sketchy "process" sketch? Is his New York gallerist preparing to sell such fraudulent works? At top dollar? With the complicity of the press? In October? Just asking. But, god, do we hope the answer is a big fat yes. · Max Protetch Gallery [MP] All set here?
