Storefront for Art and Archispeak: Party On Tuesday, September 13, 2005
Ever since we read, back in the hoary day, that it was Vito "Stroke It" Acconci and not important architect Steven Holl who complained about the somewhat-less-than-winterizable nature of their collaborative design for Storefront—jigsaw facade + New York in February = cold, angry staff—we've had a soft spot for that little anorexic's pie slice of a gallery. Though they test us, they do. To wit, regarding their current show, Can Buildings Curate (no question mark), opening tonight at 6:30 with the usual sidewalk-clogging festivities: The modern gallery setting remains a contentious, inspirational, and problematic cultural battleground. It's the backdrop to a fascinating love/hate triangle between artists, architects, and curators. Can Buildings Curate presents a trajectory from Utopian provocateurs to the contemporary condition, through a site specific installation that colonizes Storefront's idiosyncratic architecture. We can't make it—Tuesday night is for manscaping—but you can be sure that our site specific operatives will be colonizing the idiosyncratic architecture, drinking for free, and feeding us a constant patter from their Sidekicks. · Can Buildings Curate [Storefront for Art and Architecture] All set here?
