Eisenman Disrespects Calatrava, Duel Expected Tuesday, November 29, 2005
Oh, Peter. One of these days your mouth is gonna get you spanked. Or run through with Spanish steel. Loyal Reader RS brings our attention to a report in Metropolis. At a recent forum at Columbia, where he was meant to spar with Charles Jencks, Eisenman instead let loose a fusilade of invective at Santiago Calatrava, his colleague and New York rival (who, by the way, is kicking Lil' Pete's ass by any measure of fame and success). Words can sting: I know why [that crazy Spaniard] is successful—because the buildings are one-liners, they're easy. They are saccharine, they're not structural at all—you don't have to know anything about structure. And, you know, why a subway station in New York should look like a bird—that's probably "multiple coding," but to me it's just dumb. My name is Santiago Calatrava. You dissed my building. Prepare to die. · The New Iconic Building? [Metropolis] Reader Comments (13 extant) 1. Someone who takes up acres of land with dark gray concrete blocks and calls it a memorial is dissing ANYONE ELSE'S WORK as being saccharine and a one-liner? please somebody needs a hug . . . By the admonisher at November 29, 2005 11:55 AM2. its great to know that the petty backbitting continues on well into the prime and into the twilight of architects' careers! It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy thinking about that! By intern searching for a mentor at November 29, 2005 2:31 PM3. How fortuitous, dear Intern. We're always looking for an able hand. And we're never less than impeccably mentorial. Drop us a line. By The Guttersniper at November 29, 2005 2:55 PM4. i propose an absolute moratorium on discussing anything eisenmanian. Take a stand against stupidity, senility, and self-aggrandizement! and just let it go by. The guy has been washed up since 1982, and its time we let him disappear, if not forcible kicked him out. Besides, he is teaching at the GSD next semester, which is close. Anyone who manages to nearly bankrupt a large midwestern city with one project shouldn't, perhaps, get such large toys to play with. peter who? The architectural equivalent of Rush Limbaugh..... A legacy of pompous words and minor/disfunctional buildings. Like all to many at his level in the profession, his greatest creation is himself.
