The Gutter Salutes: Coco Brown
Tuesday, November 29, 2005

We've lost one of the greats—a developer so boldly and hubristically and feloniously awesome that we might have to spend the whole day in our cups so we can juice up enough to shed a single glistening tear. Coco Brown, visionary behind the Houses at Sagaponac—the "k" was dropped, the Times avers, "for distinctiveness"—has passed. And what is more distinctive than trying to hire every known star and starlet in the archifirmament to give some sense of wonder to a tract of brushy wasteland hard by the airport on the wrong side of the Montauk Highway? Nothing is. Meier! Selldorf! Eric Owen Moss! Philip fucking Johnson! They all heeded his call. And endured his sermons:

"Architects can be very self-important, dressing in black like priests and making grand abstract pronouncements about how we live and how we ought to live," he said. "They do have enormous egos."

Coco, you'll be missed.

I represent the Houses At Sagaponac and have worked with Coco on the project for over three years.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Coco Brown. For those of us who have had the opportunity to experience the sheer vitality of Coco's personality this loss is all the more profound.

Coco was keenly aware of the project’s future without him. While it is impossible to replace his defining presence on the project he constantly urged us to proceed in his absence.

We are committed to continue until the very last house of his legacy is built. It was his dream to complete this project, and we are determined to carry that dream out.

Thank you Harry Brown and the Brown family for letting me share in a small window of honor in time. You have touched a part of my life I will never forget and have made some dreams of mine come true.

Harry you were a visionary leader that paved the way and pushed the boundaries in film and real estate.

Thank you for being a friend you will not be forgotten

I heard, just recently, about Coco. I worked for him for a couple of years quite some time ago. I thought, and spoke, of Coco often. I feel such a loss, perhaps selfishly. I think of Katie and Esme and Morgan and hope that all of you are well, and to let you know that you are very much in my thoughts. This message may never reach the three of you, and it is late as well,...maybe someday, again, we will meet and I can tell you of my deep appreciation for all of you. Peter, I hope that you are also well.

Love,
Joan
