Ground Zero Memorial: Holy Kill Zone
Friday, January 13, 2006

We came late to the Post today—we were waiting for a nice long ride on the L—but one little sleeper of an item caught our jaundiced eye. "WTC Memorial a Secure Thing"? We think, with all due respect to our lame-duck governor, not. Not at all! In fact, aside from the obvious splash zone problems with the chosen design—problems that its hopeful fundraisers now tell us will be partially solved with an additional infusion of $300,000—security has been the most obvious, um, shortcoming since the day the design was unveiled. Fact: When completed, in 2000-whenever, the WTC memorial will immediately become a plum target for nemeses and ne'er-do-wells, far and wide. Fact: The interiority of the memorial—all those grievers sandwiched underground between concrete walls—will increase this danger. Fact: Massive, disruptive, airport-style security will be required at all entry points, coloring the experience of 9/11 remembrance with a reminder of its cause. Fact: Until this basic reality is acknowledged, excuse our French, it's a death trap. Fiction: "Work on the World Trade Center memorial, set to begin in March, won't be halted by last-minute gaffes over security similar to what happened to the Freedom Tower, Gov. Pataki's top adviser for Ground Zero security vowed yesterday."

They should have just left it in ruins. When this thing is finally completed it will become a big skateboard park.
