A Rem Koolhaas Burns! All Mourn? Monday, January 23, 2006
Two weeks ago we lost a Louis Sullivan to the flames and now—No. We won't go there. There's no comparison; this was God's wrath. Rem's Soho Prada store has always been a weak, wack effort, long before it opened, and, had it lived, for all damnable eternity. But check out those brazillion dollar Brazilian zebra wood floors soaking up the firefighters' spume! Ah yes, tragedy strikes. · Fire Rips Through Historic Soho Building [WABC] Reader Comments (6 extant) 1. ooooh, hurts so good. By Anonymous at January 24, 2006 12:17 AM2. HA! Another building very hard to forget, as a very good woman´s love By Camilo Caicedo at January 28, 2006 10:39 PM4. but the difference is that it´s not destroyed at all. By Camilo Caicedo at January 28, 2006 10:55 PM5. And Rem is accused of using rare Brazil Zebra wood that is not a green thing to do. Tropical anything is bad as it destroys entire ecological systems which is also said to be used by the idyl rich who shop at stores like Prada where one buys clothing and fashion at thousands of dollars while outside in NYC there are homeless. The same is said of other cities like LA where Prada has a splashy store. Rem comments that the public is insatiable about "flashy" architectural wonders like those designed by Frank Ghery and alike. All of them are "Superstar" architects. Perhaps some day schools of architecture (SU included where I taught last semester) may pay less homage to these stars and get to theories that we are all humans sharing one planet and design with humanitarian precepts.. Let us then, cloth folks, house them and let them work for a living wage contributing for the betterment of all. The latter is the counter culture, not my words. It is our modern dilemma and maybe, just maybe, architects do not have to reflect the "haves" separating from the "have-nots". Again, not my soul opinion, but is being said as our society has more wealth in the hands of few and the rest are loosing the middle class status. We are becoming Brazil and why?.... 6. John Barradas, you are becoming brazil because you people are so fucking stupid. By Brazilian Person at May 24, 2006 2:28 AMAll set here?
