Architectural Record: Not the Prettiest Mag Ever?
Tuesday, February 7, 2006

blndsqrlogo.jpgFirst of all, we've been remiss in not reporting the several recent departures from Architectural Record. So consider them reported. Wise women, gallant in their defense of the Mother Art, have moved on to points unknown. We salute them for the decision to leave the magazine that, when we picture it in our collective mind's eye, we invariably imagine as swathed in shades of brown. And there are so many more inspiring sights to see. Which brings us to a query received today from deep within the hierarchies at McGraw Hill...

Anyone want to weigh in on the suckiness of the ads in Arch Record lately? Have the publishers signed an exclusive deal to work only with blind squirrels for graphic design? Seriously. Someone back me up...unless only blind squirrels are reading at this point. In which case, sorry. Carry on....

We would, of course—we can't help ourselves!—weigh in at length on this burning issue. But we left the ranks of Record readers long ago, gifting our subscription to our friend Shadrach, above. If any of you have actually seen the magazine described, feel free to comment below.

As the only MAJOR architectural publication left on the block, it appears that AR is taking its cues from W and acting anyway and doing anything they want. As the purported voice of the astoundingly inept AIA, I wait longingly for the Gutter to take them to task - in a way only the Gutter can.

Chances are the big MGH only cares about the benjamins these days. This of course causes those who can find something better to do so leaving the stubborn corporate types behind.

As bad as it may be, it was way worse ten years ago. But Robert Ivy is still a dork.

Oh, for another Reed Kroloff.

The Architectural Record is the most spectacularly ugly and ineptly put together magazine in the global architecture market. But what this really proves is the paucity of any worthy contender stateside. Come on, publishing houses! How hard can it be to take some business off this fattened calf of a market leader?

The average age of Record editors (who are all archistar fuckers) is now well past retirment age, the ArchRecord2 section is a joke because a "young" architect to Record staff is someone around 50yo who designs "cool" things, and now the magazine will have little to no relevant technology coverage due to the recent staff departures. The graphic design was dated when it was launched 10 years ago! In the recent issue of Oculus, Ivy says that Record had nothing to do with the closing of PA. So not true! McGraw-Hill used its financial muscle to kill PA. It's well know. Interesting that he still feels the need to defend that 10 years later. Here's hoping for competition to emerge.
