Fear and Loathing at 40 Bond
Wednesday, February 8, 2006

40bond.jpgHow many architecture journos does it take to fill a blog post? Three to send the info and one to sneak some pics. We asked—What went down at the presser to kick off the media-myth shitstorm for 40 Bond, Ian Schrager and Jacques Herzog's snazztastic new condo-to-be?—and they answered: nothing but tons of unadulterated awesome! After the jump: Schrager on Fashion, some notes on cliche (courtesy a former associate, no less...), a txt lst of attendees, and, in a stunning photographic revelation, Jacques Herzog eats sushi.

Journo #1:

ian was in fine form. he talked a lot about jacques, how they'd been trying to work together for ten years: "i consider him the architects' architect". no mention of rem (koolhaas) [Ed: Duh?] but lots and lots about their forthcoming project in las vegas. "it's going to be twice as big as the mgm grand." that's pretty grand! then he said, the part you'll be interested in: "i hate this notion of designer architects--it's like designer jeans for all i care." good sushi!

Journo #2 thought it would be cute to text message us a list of all the eminences who interrupted their busy Wednesdays to harangue Herzog and nosh on Nobu. We present it, with annotated translations, as it arrived:

Mc pdrsn. aby bsl. pl gbrgr. jf kpns. kln mcwgn. aric. phl nbl. raul bar. k stein. suz stev.

Jeff Kipnis? Jeff Kipnis?!? Luckily no less than a former Guttersniper himself threw us this (Thanks, man! Hey, coffee next week??):

Jeff Kipnis was there. No idea why; it was totally insane. He thought it was a symposium! To wit: during a Q&A with Ian and Jacques--there, after all, to sell us on their actually totally cool-looking new building (which has these cast-aluminum gates at the ground level that are going to kick ass, and open up a whole discussion about ornament that I'm burning to have, and also look right at home in that oddball not-quite neighborhood)--Kipnis asked, approximately: "Your building is full of condo cliches...what gives?" To which Herzog, a total friend of his, bt, responded, exactly: "Sometimes if you make the cliches more real they're really amazing." And the black cod from Nobu was too sweet....

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, through-the-window photographs (courtesy Journo #4) of Jacques Herzog selecting from the sushi buffet. Be afraid.
