Rafael Vinoly: Exonerated, but Bad
Friday, March 10, 2006

81714az.jpgIt's entirely possible—we hope it's true—that our continuing Vinoly coverage has made him feel a bit, well, cowed. Which is the only possible explanation for the completely insane shape of this building, designed for somewhere in London. An across-the-pond operative sent in this Baunetz (the German Archinect?) announcement, which we have asked our current intern (and you wonder why we're looking) to translate:

In London the New Yorker architect Rafael Vinoly presented its plans for a multistoried building "EC3" in the Fenchurch Street of the public. The draft plans 46 floors a high building, which is to replace an existing multistoried building. Beside the tower a further, three projectiles counting office building is intended. The 192 meters high tower is to offer 79,000 square meters of office surface and 1,100 square meters of retail trade surfaces. For the public is in 40. Stick a "Skyroom" planned, which is to offer over four projectiles a high window front to the visitor a round around panorama view over the city. The solidium is easily inward curved, with which to the bend of the river and be referred on geometry of the medieval roads, which surround the building site, it is to be referred.
If that's easily inward curved, the UN building must be shaking in its foundations.

Hm. A concave glass facade facing south.

Wasn't there just a concert hall in some big west coast city that burned its neighbor's retinas out by focusing sunlight in odd ways?

Raffy, let me help you avoid the next lawsuit. Frit that glass.
