Gutterland Police Blotter: Moynihan Station Heist Redux!
Monday, May 1, 2006

2006_04_penn2.jpgBCE%20Galleria.jpgWe've sorta been following the story about David Childs' triumphantly arched return to Moynihan Station. And we sorta remembered how the previous redesign sparked quite a few well-founded accusations of brazen theft. Yes, kids: theft. When one takes that which is not one's to take. And along comes the Bitter Realist—no stranger to the stranger realms of vickage—to tell us what was took:

Oh 'Sniper:

It's been a while since we last felt the tingle of plagiarism in our loins.  But surfing your parent site this morning and stumbling across the new Moynihan Station, we thought of a different, more burning sensation, that one you get when the waiter tells you not to touch the hot plate he just put in front of you, and you go ahead and do it anyways.  We're thinking that David Childs has gotta have some seriously red and crinkly fingertips.  It's like the guy doesn't have enough legal action in his life --he's gotta go and rip off, er, "riff" on our main man Santiago.  How do you say "served with papers" in Castillan?

So it's back: My name is Santiago Calatrava. You stole my building. Prepare to die.

I agree with #1. Did Calatrava invent a curving glass indoor space that connects two existing buildings?? No. The similarities in these two spaces are actually really minimal.

I think it's time for a new Sniper, again. Or time for someone to start a new blog to divert the attention from those bored with the Gutter. I mean, why is the Gutter on this kick about architects copying other architects? The examples given are not examples of plagiarism. I hope for a new Sniper that:
-- has an architectural background so they know their readers
-- posts some original content rather than report crap found elsewhere
-- stops posting about Zaha, Gehry, Eisenman and other archaic starchitects
-- gets off his/her ass to post before 11 am

No credit to William Goldman? In a blotter item?

Goose and gander, blah, blah, blah.

There's nothing new about SOM using calatrava's design. When the original design for the new Penn Station was being done in the SOM office the client threatened to bring in Calatrava as SOM's design work was too dull. A quick panic charette over the weekend ensued and the result was the beautiful potato chip - now departed. Unfortunately SOM has reverted back to the dull design they had prior to that charette. Perhaps they should just get Calatrava in and do it properly.

Still SOM designed the above Toronto Tower with Calatrava's atrium. Maybe they kept the cd's.

It's like this certain full-of-herself architect in Chicago who has a copyright on a page with a four-hour, fire-rated concrete wall assembly. Can you copyright an arch? Can you copyright a four-hour wall? Actually the SOM arch resembles a lot of the slender rooftop arches by Scleich in Germany. It has NOTHING to do with the Calatrava building in any way...
