Nicolai: Didn't Suck Yesterday
Monday, May 1, 2006

nicolaibust.jpgThough he has famously failed once again to bring home the Pulitzer (losing this time to a fashion-inflected political critic), Nicolai Ouroussoff has not lost his ability to surprise us. Indeed, adding his voice to the Jane Jacobs din on Sunday, he shocked and amazed his readers by not sucking. And even, we are not too stingy to admit, writing some stuff that was interesting. The whole exercise looks like foundation work for yet more paeans to the new qua new in the Muschampian mode, and statements like this reek of the usual sloppy thinking...

Architects now in their mid-40's — Ms. Jacobs's age when she published "Death and Life" — do not share their parents' unqualified hatred of Modernist developments. They understand that an endless grid of brick towers and barren plazas is dehumanizing.

...but, really, it mostly didn't suck.

Nicolai is another critic patting little Jane on the head, referring to her as a mother who made some simple, emotional observations about city life. Now, Ouroussoff writes, it's time for the grownups, the real thinkers, to celebrate things like the ‘heroic scale’ of L.A.’s highways (seriously, is this guy a complete fool?). Hey, Jacobs didn’t have an answer for suburban sprawl, so really, come on. It is a dishonest piece of writing (nearly blaming Jane Jacobs for Battery Park City!), giving a shout-out to Robert Moses, who brought us roads, parks, and bridges. In what translation was Jacobs opposed to roads, parks, and bridges? It was the context of those roads, particularly, that was Jacobs' issue. You know, the 'road' that would have destroyed downtown Manhattan. Ouroussoff says Jacobs' death might be taken as permission to move on, but the essay is nothing more than a pissing contest and it is, frankly, disgusting.

How can Gutter find one of Ourossoff's worst pieces to be good? Gutter is WAY off on this one. Jane deserved greater credit and Ourossoff is so shortsighted and wrong in his piece. By contrast, Sunday's Toronto Star had a fantastic spread paying tribute to Jacobs' legacy:

Ourossoff had the audacity to say that we should remember Robert Moses at the hour of Jane Jacobs death. It's understandable that he's giving the shout out to Moses, who had absolute authority and WAS big government (while Jane was just a neighborhood citizen and a writer) as Ourossoff writes for the Times Corporation.

This guy is almost as bad as Muschamp, where the hell does the New York Times get these hacks from? Lets reject the street and go back to building the old WTC, Lincoln Center, towers in the park, lower manhattan expressways and while were at it lets replicate the sprawl of Los Angeles in Manhattan: Give me a break. If this guy ever gets a Pulitzer I will lose all respect for other Pulitzer prize winners. I bet Ourjackoff has never read a page of Jane Jacobs before he wrote this trash article.

Better yet, I bet he's never even read one line of Jane Jacobs.

6.

Uh, Sniper, how young are you? How about a little historical perspective?

When Jane Jacobs wrote Death and Life, Modernism was the official style of the Establishment. Their rule was soon to be ended by their sons and daughters at Woodstock and in the Haight, but they were still in charge, and they were building Lincoln Center and places that looked just like it in cities and universities all over America.

The Rockefellers were the biggest patrons, at MOMA, Chase, and Empire State Plaza, the god-awful-place in Albany by Rem-fave Harrison. Gropius made the Harvard Graduate School of Design the unofficial school of the Fortune 500, with frequent seminars and symposia for US Steel and General Motors.

Whaddayou talkin about, "do not share their parents' unqualified hatred of Modernist developments"? Have you noticed the hottest thing in design is neo-60s Modernism. Who do you think built all that stuff? People who hated it?

It looks like you're not going to link to this good critique of the article by Duany, so I will.

Nicky is channeling old timey Paul Goldberger's preference for prevarication and on this hand that and on the other hand this nonsense(and didn't Sorkin do a riff on that?) However dear, dear gutter, there is a kernel of an idea here that must be further explored - that most "sensible" people - meaning people with sensibilities and a trust fund or a gig as a critic at a major newspaper - will always prefer a freeway through the middle of Manhattan over those nasty mall-like chain stores. Icky.

Lincoln Center? Ha Ha Ha... is he putting us on or this (pace a recent Muschamp spiel) another unknown monument to some other dare-not-speak-it's-name-subculture? As one of those 40-something architects my taste may be broad but it can still discriminate dross from gold, and maybe trend from truth.

This post is meant to be humorous, ironic. I hope.

Ourossoff is not a very good observer on his best days but he exceeded my expectations in his attempt at a knockdown of Jacobs. He's so lame he doesn't even know what her weak points really are.

Here's the dirt on the whole lot:

Jacobs, Duany, Krier, Stern and our dear puppet Plater-Zyberk.

The New subUrbanism is Al Qaeda and Jacobs is the ring leader! Their disdain for modernism, metal and concrete has driven them to destory!!! Love your vernacular; go live in caves.... just as long as it is within walking distance of city hall!

9-11 was a conspiracy of the nu; build a Seaside at Ground Zero they scream! New Urbanize the moon, mars and beyond! Their reach does not end there, oh no. Global warming is a product of Duany's hot air, only to gain more control from hurricanes. It's a nasty cycle. They control the Church; Krier IS GOD!

White pickett fences will reign supreme....

Jane will rise again....!!

WELL, NICOLAI IS RIGHT ABOUT THE NEW URBANISTS,BUT EVERYTHING ELSE HE SAYS SEEMS A LITTLE CONVOLUTED. can anyone really say that denying the last 50 years of architecture and city planning is supposed to somehow progess a society???? New urbanists use expiration dates as a tool to make themselves look controversial and provacative. they are nevertheless retroactive and will never build a real city, but then again who does.

Krier doesn't believe in God. When young he was a Marxist. Today he is a passionate Randian, who thinks everything other than the material is a fantasy.

Otherwise, maybe you're right.
