Bad Skin Nearly Done Marring Gehry's NYC Debut Thursday, July 6, 2006
It's almost over. The · Bad Skin Mars Gehry's NYC Debut [The Gutter] Reader Comments (20 extant) 1. this building is such complete trash it's not even funny. and no, seeing it in person does not do it any further justification. By toaster at July 6, 2006 3:11 PM2. hear, hear! By recent west side jogger at July 6, 2006 3:45 PM3. #1, 2 - lame gehry trashers. Nothing to offer except vile comments. Probably nimby, unemployed losers who are against Atlantic Yards and will trash a celebrated architect at every turn. By homey at July 6, 2006 4:25 PM4. homey - get yer dictionary out and look up "pot calling kettle black". By anomalous at July 6, 2006 4:45 PM5. #4 lets see...my comments are true, while you try to bring someone better than you down a notch. Why? Because you're jealous, bored, unemployed, some combination of the above. And I am no architect and would never trash one with the outstanding reputation like Gehry. By homey at July 6, 2006 4:52 PM6. haha, hoomey, when you learn a little something about architecture, come back and let us know. thanks pal. why so condescending towards opinions? insecure much? By toaster at July 6, 2006 5:41 PM7. Why does being employed have anything to do with trashing Gehry or not? Employed architects/designers all love Gehry? What fantasy world do you live in? Hollywood??? By Phillip Johnson at July 6, 2006 5:56 PM8. hollywood?!?! i knew it!!! homey is brad pitt!!! should have seen his most obvious give-away: ignorance! By toaster at July 6, 2006 5:59 PM9. homey - almost everything you said in your first comment is wrong. I don't live anywhere near the building, I'm gainfully employed in a job I like, if Atlantic Yards were scaled down a bit I'd fully support it, and I've never trashed a celebrated, or non-celebrated for that matter, architect. Besides, one doesn't need to be an architect to criticize architecture, just as one doesn't need to be a director to criticize a movie. By anomalous at July 6, 2006 6:16 PM10. #9..you see, it all comes to light. You really don't like Atlantic Yards, so you trash Gehry here with no offer of explanation, no comparisons and no better examples (since you defend the first two comments like they were yours...which they probably were). You unemployed people would be so much more useful if you had something to do besides be NIMBYs and masturbate at your computer all day. Tall buildings aren't your enemy. You are. By homey at July 6, 2006 7:36 PM11. homey, I'm loving this conversation because every time you type you dig yourself deeper into the pit of idiocy. The first two comments weren't mine and I wasn't defending them. Read again, I was attacking your substance-less remarks. Also, as I already said I'm not unemployed. Although you think I have, I haven't criticized this building yet. Two things bug me about it - the windows and the height. As Gutter mentions the windows are really off. I find the gradient shading is un-attractive. You've also assumed I don't like tall buildings. That's a bad assumption. Manhattan should have lots more tall buildings as far as I'm concerned, and I'm a Manhattanite. I think this building would look much better if it were several stories taller. By anomalous at July 6, 2006 10:15 PM12. #11 There you go again, trying to run around the issue. First off, I said you probably typed 1&2, which you might not have, but you wouldn't likely admit to it if you had. So you did and just admit it. Second, my remarks were far from substanceless. You may not agree but it seems obvious that the posters here are Gehry-haters and are trashing THIS building because they hate AY and will do anything to bring everything gehry down. Third, you say you're all for tall buildings, in Manhattan. Typical ratner-hate speak. Why not Brooklyn? It has several districts that have tall buildings (like near Atlantic Yards) and like all of NY, BK needs more housing. Fourth, take your gehry/ay/ratner hate and stick it in your ear, homey don't play that. By homey at July 6, 2006 10:39 PM13. how does my like of tall buildings in Manhattan translate into "ratner-hate speak"? Homey, your synapses are not running on all cylinders... Why are you trying to turn this into an Atlantic Yards issue? AY is miles from where I live, I've been in that neighborhood exactly once in my life, and whether AY gets built as planned by Forest City Ratner or any other developer will have no impact on me. My impression from what little I know of the project it seems oversized for the neighborhood. I'm certainly also not anti-Gehry. This building doesn't appeal to me, but I'm a fan of many of his other buildings. Maybe you can't comprehend this but even great architects, artists, musicians, writers, etc sometimes produce crap. Disliking one work doesn't mean you hate the artist, it just means you don't like that particular work. I like Gehry, but think this building is a mis-step. The anti-Gehry, anti-Atlantic Yards, anti-Ratner idea is a product of your mind, not mine or anybody else that's left a comment here. As I've tried to explain I don't harbor those opinions and it's more than a little bizarre that you keep insisting I do. By anomalous at July 6, 2006 11:37 PM14. #13: this is going nowhere...and its Friday. Moreover, you're boring me. Have a fun weekend trying to trash Gehry. By homey at July 7, 2006 8:20 AM15. It's going nowhere because you've yet to put forth a cogent thought. I have no interest in trashing Gehry. Why do you insist on ascribing motives to me that I do not have? I hope you, Frank Gehry and every other architect on the planet have a nice weekend. By anomalous at July 7, 2006 8:51 AM16. hahaha, know what the best part of this debate is? is that you guys are arguing over an internet message board, and anomalous can't simply punch homey in the face for being so ridiculously naive. SO, i propose we have an "architecture off" where *gasp*, people actually debate in person! *cogent, nice GRE word. *"boring me". haha, i think homey has a self-importance problem. By toaster at July 7, 2006 10:44 AM17. I'm praying that there are some kind of trim strips that they are going to place over the joints to hide them. I think the building is one of the nicest shapes Gehry has come up with; but the curtainwall has ruined it. By anonymous at July 7, 2006 11:26 AM18. The building only addresses the street edge. I'd hardly call it a "nice" shape. There was some shop on Rivington that carries "Fuck Frank Gehry" shirts... funny. The BLUE kicks this building's ass! By Johnprolly at July 7, 2006 12:39 PM19. Good show, boys! Who says there's no "discourse" on this site? By The Guttersniper at July 7, 2006 3:49 PM20. The King doesn't have any clothes on!
